Andrew Wyeth - Christina’s World (1948)
Easily one of my favorites. I’m not entirely sure why, but this painting just strikes me as an incredibly, incredibly poignant work.
I mean, it’s heartbreaking just to consider the utter helplessness and desperation of the polio-stricken woman as she attempts to crawl her way across the field. She just looks so terribly broken and alone. As a matter of fact, this, I’m convinced, is what loneliness looks like.
But I think the most interesting thing about the painting is this: I could never quite tell whether the message conveyed by it is hopeless or hopeful.
…Either way, it never fails to depress me.
